GAR
POST 317 Sidney, Illinois erected this monument in the old Homer Cemetery in
1868. In 1871 the Mt. Hope Cemetery Association took over the old burial
ground and has maintained the site and monument ever since.
Homer,
Illinois' GAR Post 263 established its cemetery shortly after the War to provide
a final resting place for its membership and those local boys who had fallen and
their remains returned home. It is located on the east edge of the Village
along the old road along which Abraham Lincoln had traveled on his itinerant
legal practice in Illinois' Eighth Judicial Circuit.
As the membership of the post dwindled after World War 1 Post 263 turned administration of the cemetery over to the newly organized American Legion Post.
